Notes:
BAR had their cars impounded by a French court on Thursday and were unable to get them released until after Friday's free practice. Button and Villeneuve therefore took to the modified track for the first time on their outlap in Friday Qualifying. Button got round but is last on the timesheets, while his teammate put in a superb, instinctive lap to take provisional pole on a drying track, finally finishing 7th.
The unusual order above can be credited to track conditions - wet at the start, it dried slowly, then rapidly towards the end of the session, allowing the last few drivers to go out on dry tyres with a huge performance advantage. Thus a first - the Minardi's on the front row!
Sadly, the historic Minardi 1-2 was not to survive scrutineering - Wilson's car was found to be 2.5kg underweight and his 2nd place time was deleted, relegating him to the back of the grid. |
