Notes:

Other than Massa, who was slow away, all made a clean start. Things got messy at Turn 1 however, Montoya locked up under braking, jinked left and bumped his team mate Ralf Schumacher, pitching him into a spin and retirement. Da Matta's race also ended almost before it had begun when he was collected in the melee. Montoya, meanwhile, had to pit for a new nose at the end of lap 1.

Coulthard, starting from the back after an engine change on Saturday, was up to 9th by the third lap. Raikkonen, having qualified strongly, struggled for pace until his Mercedes engine let go (again!) on lap 10.

Michael Schumacher, confirmed the light fuel load which had allowed him to set such a blisteringly quick qualifying time, pitted on lap 9 but had opened up such a gap by then that he emerged from the pits in 7th immediately behind the closely bunched 2nd to 6th place holders.

Button pitted towards the end of the first pit stop window, enabling him to pass Alonso, who subsequently ran very wide in turn 4, dropping to 11th. Sato found himself comfortably in 2nd after the first round of pitstops, although behind him in 3rd, Barrichello was on a 2-stop strategy.

After his second stop, Button found himself stuck behind the 2-stopping Coulthard, but daringly passed him round the outside at turn 1. Coulthard pitted on the following lap, emerging 9th, only to suffer McLaren's third engine failure of the weekend and retire on lap 26.

The best battle of the afternoon was down in the mid-field between a hard-charging Montoya and young Christian Klien. For most of a lap Montoya was all over the back of the Jaguar, risking his front wing on several occasions before finally taking him cleanly into the final corner.

Barrichello's 2-stop strategy paid off, putting him in front of Sato after both had completed their final scheduled stops of the afternoon. Sato, knowing he had to strike back quickly or lose all hope of 2nd place, made a late lunge down the inside at turn 1, pushing Barrichello wide but damaging his own front wing in the process. A further stop for a new nose was closely followed by another spectacular engine failure, although thankfully there was no carnage in the smoke on this occasion.

After the drama of Monaco, normal service appears to have resumed, with Michael Schumacher taking his 6th win of the season and Ferrari their 4th 1-2.
