Notes:

It's difficult to find much of interest to say about today's race, but I'll give it a go!

Montoya in P2 on the grid made a slow start, allowing Trulli to blast through and edge past M Schumacher to take the lead into Turn 1. Button, after a mistake in qualifying, needed to make up places at the start from a lowly 14th grid slot - he failed to do so!

As at Imola, M Schumacher retook the lead at the first round of pitstops. Barrichello, who had professed himself happy with his qualifying position despite being over a second slower than his team mate, proved to be on a two-stop strategy, which eventually secured him 2nd in the race but was in no way enough to give him a chance at the win.

Montoya's pace slowed after the first pitstops amid reports that his left front brake had been on fire during the stop. This early indicator proved entirely accurate - he left the pits after his third stop to find he had no brakes, using the engine to control his speed he returned to the pits ... slowly ... but was unable to stop in time to avoid knocking his front-jack man flying. He was fortunately unhurt, but Montoya was out of the race.

Button had failed to make much headway through the field, but Montoya's retirement was enough to get him 1 point for 8th place. His team mate, Sato, after a superb qualifying performance to take 3rd on the grid, drove a good race to finish 5th but was unable to match the pace of the on-form Renaults.

Although Trulli couldn't hold on to the lead, he did manage to take his first podium of the season, finishing in 3rd behind the two Ferraris. Alonso, starting lower down the grid, came through to 4th, which takes Renault to 2nd in the constructor's championship.

There was an unusually high attrition rate, with 7 cars failing to finish. Both Minardi's spun out, although Bruni had been struggling with locking brakes for some time before he eventually departed the track. Both Jordans retired with hydraulics related problems. Panis added a retirement due to failing hydraulic pressure to an earlier drive-thru penalty for pitlane speeding - an unhappy afternoon for the Frenchman who is unlikely to remain with Toyota next season. And finally, a throttle control problem in his Jaguar brought an early end to Klien's race.

Concern on the pitwall over a problem with M Schumacher's car - reportedly a cracked exhaust - brought a glimmer of hope to the latter stages of the race, but it wasn't enough to stop his winning streak ... is anything?!
