Notes:
Brilliant start from Button on pole, who led M Schumacher by 2.7 secs by the end of L1. Coulthard ran into the back of Trulli early in the lap and lost his front wing, pitching him to the back of the field after a pit stop to replace it.

Montoya tried to take 2nd from Schumacher and ended up on the grass, recovering he forced his team mate on to the grass and Sato benefitted by taking 4th from Ralf.

Pantano was the first to retire, on L7, with hydraulic problems.

Button held his lead through the first stint and the question of how light the BAR was in qualifying was answered when Button pitted on L9, M Schumacher on L11. Button's long stop and Schumacher's blistering laps before his own stop, put Schumacher in the lead. Button seemed unhappy on his second set of tyres and the gap between him and Schumacher steadily increased throughout the second stint.

23 laps into the race, Webber was reported to have an engine problem, it proved not to be terminal but hampered his chances of finishing higher up the field. Bruni was not so lucky, retiring on L23 with brake problems.

Button pitted for the second time on L27 and picked up his pace again in the 3rd stint, maintaining the gap to Schumacher but unable to close it. These two were however in a class of their own, well ahead of the rest of the field led by Montoya.

Da Matta was given a drive-thru penalty for a blue flag incident which he served on L32, then spun into the gravel at the first chicane on the out lap, ending his race.

In the 3rd stops, Alonso leapfrogged both Trulli and Barrichello to take 5th. Challenging Ralf Schumacher for 4th, there was contact which pitched Ralf into a spin, dropping him to 7th. Race control announced there would be an investigation into this incident post-race.

Heidfeld retired with transmission problems on L52 and a BAR disappeared in a cloud of smoke from its Honda engine on L57 .. much to my relief, it was Sato rather than Button who emerged from the smoke. Button however backed off to nurse his engine through the final 5 laps, with Montoya over 20 secs behind.

In the closing stages, Alonso was chasing Montoya for 3rd and Barrichello chasing Trulli for 5th .. neither managed to take the place. Raikkonen, who started at the back after a post-qualifying engine change, benefitted from Sato's retirement to take his first championship point of the season. Michael Schumacher was untouchable again this afternoon, but it was a pleasure to see Button take a further step up the podium to 2nd place.
