Notes:

First lap incident takes out 3 cars - Scott Speed tags rear of Ralf Schumacher, tipping him into a spin at the outside of Becketts. Webber is unable to avoid the recovering Toyota, taking them both into the gravel trap and retirement. Speed pits for repairs but retires. Incident to be investigated post-race by the stewards.

Montoya was side-swiped at the start, McLaren pit crew on stand-by but he stays out. Side pod has sustained heavy damage however, which won't help airflow and may impact cooling as the race continues.

Button having a great drive from a lowly 19th on the grid, up to 12th by lap 7 and chasing Coulthard. Unfortunately his Honda engine had other ideas, letting go at Brooklands causing Button to spin on his own oil and strand in the gravel trap.

M Schumacher first of leaders to pit, followed by Raikkonen on next lap. Alonso in the lead puts in 2-3 extra laps before his own stop. Fisichella, running in his starting position of 5th manages to pass Massa in the pit stops for 4th.

After the first round of stops, the top three of Alonso, Raikkonen, M Schumacher are unchanged, Fisichella has got past Massa and Montoya has got past Heidfeld. The latter was running at good pace and holding off the following Montoya, but struggled to find a gear at the pit stop and lost several seconds.

M Schumacher again pits first at the second round and puts a blinding outlap in, taking 2nd from Raikkonen when he pits on the next lap. Clean stop from Alonso means he comfortably retains the lead.
