Fastest lap: Fernando Alonso (McLaren Mercedes) 1m 22.871s on lap 15

Race notes: Clean start from Alonso on pole, Hamilton squeezes Massa to try to hold 2nd, but Massa gets past only for Hamilton to back round the outside at turn 1. Slight contact between the two nudges Hamilton to cut the apex of the corner, but unlikely to be penalised due to the contact. Hamilton has to defend hard through the first lap, settling slightly in the second, only for a safety car to be deployed following a massive accident for Coulthard. Contact with another car at the start had damaged Coulthard's front wing, which gave way, dropping under the car and taking his steering out.

Problem for Massa - in the pits for an unscheduled stop on lap 10, given a new set of harder compound boots, but cruises round and back to the pits and into retirement on the next lap.

Hamilton is the first of the front-runners to pit, explains why he was disappointed with his qualifying performance - lighter but slower than Alonso. He is back out in 6th in clear air and Alonso leads with the full length of the start-finish straight between him and Raikkonen in 2nd.

Smooth stop for Alonso who stays ahead of Hamilton - Raikkonen now leads on the road while the pitstops play out. Superb battle going on between Rosberg in the Williams and Button in the Honda - how nice to be able to talk about Button battling with anyone this season, let alone for 7th position! He eventually loses the place to Rosberg.

Poor stop for Kubica with front-jack problems, losing a couple of places on the track and any chance of a podium. Raikkonen appears to be on a one-stop strategy but even with one less stop he doesn't seem to be able to do anything about the two McLarens. Hamilton has dropped back a little from Alonso - maybe his second set of tyres are not so much to his liking, we'll see what happens in the final stint.

Nail-biting stop for Hamilton - can he get out ahead of Raikkonen - NO! Hamilton's slower middle stint has cost him dear, but he now has fresher tyres and the same fuel load as Raikkonen, can he fight back in the last 12 laps? Alonso appears to have plenty of time to stop and retain the lead - provided there are no problems during the stop.

WOOHOO!!!!! Hamilton blasts past Raikkonen into turn 1, extraodinary move - fantastic! oh I am enjoying this season :D
