Grid penalties: Barrichello starts from pitlane after an engine change relegated him to the back of the grid |
Race notes: Most drivers starting on softer compound tyres. Another fantastic start from Hamilton taking Raikkonen on the inside and Massa round the outside to slot into 2nd behind team-mate Alonso. Alonso had the faster car at this stage of the race and opened up a gap as Hamilton sustained heavy pressure first from Massa, who eventually out-braked himself in his anxiety to get past and lost two places as a result, then Raikkonen who was less impetuous than his team-mate, but equally unable to find a way past.
Incident at T4 on lap 1 saw Sutil end his race in the gravel trap and led to an early pitstop for Liuzzi for a new nose. The second Spyker of Albers retired on lap 8 after getting stuck in 3rd gear. Albers tried to get back to the pits but temperatures ran too high and he arrived in pitlane with his engine on fire.
Kubica has a slow first stop and struggles for pace afterwards. The team have had wheel speed sensor problems all weekend and think another may have gone, causing traction control problems. Alonso, comfortably in the lead, clearly has radio problems as Ron Dennis is practically climbing over the pitwall in his anxiety to ensure Alonso has seen his pit board!
Most drivers stay on the softer compound at the first round of pitstops, saving the hard tyres for the final stint. Hamilton comes out of the pits and promptly sets the fastest lap on a full fuel load. He took a front wing adjustment during the stop and definitely seems happier in this stint ... not that he was doing badly in the first!
Kubica has another long stop as he changes his nose ... doesn't seem to improve his pace, a huge contrast to his team-mate Heidfeld who is having a very strong race in 4th. Coulthard is having the same problem with his brake pedal fouling the steering column that he had during Friday practice, radioing the team to say "not comfortable, think we should stop" ... he pits and retires on lap 37.
Hamilton is the first of the front-runners to stop, coming out behind Massa. Hard tyres are expected to add about 0.5s a lap so he shouldn't be badly held up in the period before Massa's stop unless Ferrari are playing the team card! Hamilton needs to hold the gap to Raikkonen as close as possible to ensure he regains and holds 2nd place when the pitstops are over. No change to top 5 after final schedule stop - Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Massa, although Alonso has stretched his lead and Raikkonen is definitely running faster than Hamilton in this stint.
Rosberg pulls on to the grass and retires on lap 43 with smoke coming from the rear of his Williams, a disappointing end to a strong race. Both Ferraris are pushing hard, Raikkonen closing on Hamilton at around 0.6s a lap and Massa on the rear-wing of Heidfeld's BMW. Heidfeld responds and stretches his lead over Massa. Raikkonen continues to reel in Hamilton ... but as has been said so many times before, catching is one thing, overtaking another!
Hamilton refuses to be pushed into making errors and drives a very mature race to the finish, to take 2nd in only his second GP. I think we're in for an exciting season :-)
