Race penalties: Albers - drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags. |
Race notes: Trulli stalls on grid, causing second formation lap as he is pushed off the grid and starts from the pits. Race distance reduced by 1 lap to 65 laps.
Clean start off the grid for front two rows but Alonso tries too hard to take Massa and runs wide into the gravel trap after contact at turn 1. Recovers track but loses positions to both team-mate Hamilton and Raikkonen, both of whom are fuelled heavier.
Contact between Wurz and Schumacher on lap 1 leads to Wurz's retirement with broken suspension and a pitstop for Schumacher. Debris left on track which may cause tyre problems later on.
Massa opening gap to Hamilton in 2nd. Webber called into pits by his team and retires, another disappointing weekend. Trulli also pits and drives into the garage and retirement, the fuel pump problem which caused his stall on the grid proving terminal. Raikkonen is seen slowing and cruises round to the pits and into retirement with electrical problems.
Alonso is in free air now but seems unable to close the gap to Hamilton. Speed, who had made up a lot of ground from the back of the grid, has a left rear blow-out, presumably after running over debris.
Massa first of front-runners to pit and has a flash fuel fire on exit which fortunately burns out by the time he gets to the end of the pitlane. Alonse next to pit and switches to harder compound tyres. Liuzzi coasts into pits and retirement, hampering Coulthard on his way in for his routine pitstop. Button exits pits alongside team-mate Barrichello and slides wide in the corner, clipping Barrichello's rear and losing his front wing. Another torrid weekend for Button despite some aero improvements to the Honda.
Disastrous stop for Heidfeld as he is released before the right front wheelman had finished - the wheelnut flies off and is collected by a Toyota mechanic in the next pit but Heidfeld is allowed to continue. Somehow he manages to complete the lap without his fourth wheelnut and returns to the pits safely. It ruins what was another good run for Heidfeld.
The high attrition continues with retirements from Schumacher with front suspension problem, bringing an end to a miserable afternoon for Toyota, and Heidfeld. A faulty fuel rig at the Renault garage is spoiling Kovalainen and Fisichella's strategy as they have to make additional stops to collect enough fuel.
No change at the front after the second round of pitstops but Massa and Hamilton both on the harder compound tyres for their final stint while Alonso has switched back to the softs, but a 15 second gap to team-mate Hamilton in 2nd is a lot to make up in the remaining 13 laps.
Coulthard is having another very strong run, after his good performance in Bahrain was brought to a premature end with mechanical problems. Sato is on for a possible first point for Super Aguri as Fisichella has to pit for a splash and dash with six laps to go. It's very close ... and Sato just takes 8th.
Coulthard has lost a gear, which with the new seamless shift gearbox is more of a problem than it might appear. He's trying to hold on to his 5th place through the closing laps but is losing 2 seconds a lap with Rosberg and Kovalainen just seconds behind.
He hangs on in there as Massa takes another victory, Hamilton takes the lead in the drivers' championship and Sato secures a first ever champtionship point for Super Aguri. An interesting day! |
