GRID PENALTIES:
Alonso - relegated 5 places for impeding Hamilton (see notes at foot of Qualifying page for more details).
Fisichella - relegated 5 places for impeding Yamamoto
RACE NOTES:
Very smooth start from Hamilton, Raikkonen passes Heidfeld to slot into 2nd. Alonso very circumspect, clearly more concerned about not getting tagged than making up ground on the first lap - loses a place. A couple of laps in he runs wide in the final turn and loses another place to Webber, but retakes it on the next lap and then eases past Kubica to return to where he started in 6th.

Yamamoto, on his debut for Spyker, spins out on lap 5 - the first retirement of the afternoon.

Hamilton and Raikkonen are trading fastest laps at the front, with a 3s gap between them - it will be interesting to see who's fuelled longer. Alonso still stuck in 6th behind Schumacher and Massa is making no progress through the mid-field after a bad qualifying - he's sitting behind Sato in the Super Aguri!

Heidfeld, Alonso and Rosberg are the first to pit, all on the same lap, with Alonso fuelling heavier than the others, going for a long middle stint and exiting in 12th. Hamilton and Raikkonen pit together - good news, they're very evenly matched on pace - again Hamilton fuels heavier than Raikkonen, looks like the McLarens have opted for a two-stop strategy.

Hamilton and Raikkonen much closer in this stint, gap down to 1s - Sato exits the pits in front of Hamilton causing him to lock up and lose time - dangerous phase of the race for Hamilton. Alonso, still in 6th after the first round of stops, runs wide but regains the track - he's certainly fire up but it doesn't seem to be getting him anywhere!

Massa finally pits and exits in front of Hamilton on the road - is that deliberate calculation from Ferrari? He's getting waved blue flags but he doesn't need to stay in front long to allow Raikkonen to close right up on Hamilton's tail pipe!

Button pulls to side of track and retires from 20th - his Honda clearly sick (turns out it was his engine) - shouldn't think he feels much better.

Massa yields to Hamilton, gap to Raikkonen steady at 1.1s.

Davidson makes heavy contact with Fisichella, fighting for position after Fisichella's pitstop, resulting in suspension damage and a spin, leaving him beached on the kerb after Turn 1. Liuzzi is wheeled into the garage, presumably with mechanical problems.

Raikkonen and Hamilton make their final stops, both running the last stint on the less favourable super-soft tyres - they'll have to look after them - the gap between them is around 4s. Alonso is up to 6th and finally ahead of Schumacher after the final stops. Hamilton loses a whole second to Raikkonen - problem? back-markers? tyres? sounds like he was held up in traffic, always more difficult for the leader coming across the back-markers than for the second place man following him through.

Another second out of the lead on that lap - is it still traffic or is Hamilton not handling the super-soft tyres as well as the Finn? Another second on that lap, but still picking his way through back-markers - gap now 1.2s, back to where it was before the first round of pitstops. And now just 0.5s - Raikkonen can smell the lead now!

Alonso has gained from the decision of the BMW of Kubica and the Williams of Rosberg to go for a three stop strategy, and is now up to 4th. Heidfeld in 3rd is the only driver for whom three stops seem to have worked.

In the closing laps, Hamilton is soaking up the pressure from Raikkonen just a second behind him on the track, while his team bite their nails nervously knowing that the super-softs really don't work well on the McLaren. Alonso has the bit between his teeth in 4th, trying to get past Heidfeld's BMW for the last podium spot.

Hamilton holds on for the win, Alonso 4th - Raikkonen sets fastest lap on the final lap but it's not enough!
