Grid penalties:
Five slot penalty for Vitantonio (gearbox change) puts him to the back and leaves Vettel immediately behind Button on the grid, in 15th and 14th, with three rookies ahead of them (Kobayashi, Alguersuari and Grosjean) and the two KERS-equipped McLarens behind them - should be an interesting first lap for the second half of the grid!
Race penalties:
Incident involving car 2 (Kovalainen) under investigation.
Incident involving cars 9 (Trulli) and 20 (Sutil) to be investigated after the race.
Incident involving cars 2 (Kovalainen) and 3 (Fisichella) to be investigated after the race.
Race notes:
OK - where to start! Safety Car out on lap 1 after numerous incidents - Barrichello still in the lead, Button up to 9th - game on!
Raikkonen pits for a new nosecone, Kovalainen also pits and leaves with the fuel hose still attached, spraying fuel all over Raikonnen's car which was set alight by the exhausts. Scary but hopefully he and the car are undamaged. Kovalainen came to a halt by the Brawn pit and their mechanics pulled the fuel hose off for him so he could continue.
Three cars out as a result of the first lap incidents - Trulli clearly blaming Sutil for his downfall, but the replay shows that to be something of an over-reaction. Alonso, the other car out.
Fantastic driving from Button on the re-start - up to 7th and challenging for 6th - driving like he should have been for the last few races!
Button's progress has been halted by some fine driving from Kobayashi in his first grand prix. Barrichello is first to take his scheduled pitstop and comes out in 8th, shortly losing that to the lighter Red Bull of Vettel.
Heidfeld's race is fun, stopping track-side shortly after his pitstop - apparently running out of fuel after the fuel-rig failed to work on this stop. Button has radio'd his team saying that Kobayashi is moving around a lot in the braking zone - don't know how quickly that message would have been relayed to Charlie Whiting and back to Toyota, but Button then got through into turn one. Yet to stop, Button is temporarily in 2nd.
Webber pits from the lead, and retains it. Button stays 2nd, but is 3.6s ahead of Kobayashi just two laps after he passed him, although that will largely be down to a mighty battle between Kobayashi and Nakajima which would have slowed the novice Toyota driver.
Race over for Rosberg as he drives into the garage with smoke coming from the right-hand bank of the Toyota engine.
Button pits, feeding back out into 10th. Shortly afterwards Nakajima flies off the track and across the gravel into the barriers at turn 4. He's out of the car and the car is being recovered, so no Safety Car. Replay shows Kobayashi weaving as Nakajima exited the pits, taking the latter's front wing off and turning him into a passenger.
Vettel the last of the front-runners to stop, has a slow tyre-change and comes out behind Button. He's stayed on hard tyres so will also have to stop again.
As the last pitstops play out, Button emerges in 7th behind Kovalainen, who we believe has to stop again to use the option tyre. Even if the doesn't, with Barrichello currently in 3rd, over 12s down on Kubica in 2nd, Button only has to finish 7th to win the championship.
Kovalainen pits - Button up to 6th. Hamilton takes 3rd from Barrichello. Rubens has a puncture - he really doesn't have any luck at his home grand prix. He pits - left rear puncture, presumably from the contact with Hamilton that broke the latter's front wing endplate.
Job done - Button wraps up his first Drivers' Championship and Brawn take the Constructors' title at their first attempt.
