- for failing to slow for a yellow flag: Sutil, Barrichello, Button and Alonso
- for impeding other cars while limping back to the pits after his second accident: Buemi
- for a gearbox change: Kovalainen and Liuzzi
- for a chassis change: Glock and Webber

Race penalties:

Race notes:
Glock does not start due to the injuries sustained in his accident in Qualifying. Webber starts from the pitlane.
Webber pits three times in the first six laps - appears to be having problems with the headrest structure coming loose.
Buemi cruises into the garage and retire on lap 12.
Sutil in 9th tangles with Kovalainen in 8th in an overtaking move on lap 14, both continue but the incident allows Button to drive quietly past them into 8th.
Big accident for Alguersuari at 130R on lap 45 brings the Safety Car out. Rosberg the only car in the top runners yet to pit, he gets into the pitlane before it closes and effectively has a 'free' stop, emerging in 5th.
Safety Car in with 4 laps to go.
