Notes: Massa sustained head injuries in a qualifying session accident, in which he was hit on the head by a spring from Barrichello's car, before spearing head-on into the tyre barriers. He was treated in the circuit medical centre, before being transferred to hospital where he underwent surgery and was then kept in a medically induced coma.
As at 6 August 2009, he is making a good recovery although it is not clear when he will again be able to sit behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. In the meantime, his vacant seat has lured Michael Schumacher out of retirement ... I'll say no more!
Jaime Alguersuari qualified last in his first race, having replaced Sebastien Bourdais in the Toro Rosso.
