Notes:

Major accident for Hamilton in the final period of qualifying, nose buried in the tyre wall. Hamilton clearly shaken but slowly gets himself out of the car, only to drop to his knees then lie down when he tries to stand. Replay shows right front tyre failure was the cause of a very high-speed accident - but possibly some sort of wheel or suspension failure caused the tyre failure. Session red-flagged. McLaren doctor says "he's all right", but no official news yet. He's receiving attention to his legs at the scene, possibly a cut rather than anything more serious, although it all seems to be taking too long. He's stretchered into the ambulance, hooked up to a drip and with a neckbrace on, but giving a thumbs up and a wave as he goes. No evidence of splints or cut-away overalls around his legs, so hopefully just playing safe after a high-speed impact.

Ron Dennis reports that the accident resulted from a failure to the wheel gun used on the right front wheel, which meant that the wheel wasn't on properly. The same wheel gun had been used on Alonso's wheel but fortunately he hadn't yet started to really lean on the car and escaped without incident.

Update from medical centre: ambulance has only just arrived and Hamilton is conscious and talking but too early to give any further information.

As the session re-starts, Ron Dennis reports from the medical centre that Hamilton is fine, has no injuries but is being kept under observation for a few hours, either at the track medical centre or, for precaution's sake, at the local hospital. He did not lose consciousness at any time and is not in pain.

If Hamilton starts tomorrow, he will do so from 10th.
