Notes - Period 1: Davidson drops his car off the track into the gravel trap in the closing stages of the period bringing yellow flags out, possibly spoiling the final runs of those trying to get through to the next period. Button can't do enough and will go no further in today's qualifying, adding to the misery of his home grand prix where he missed 2nd practice on Friday with back pain. He is joined in the bottom six, rather surprisingly, by Nico Rosberg who is outqualified by team-mate Wurz for the first time this season. Rosberg reports technical problems reducing his top speed by 15-20kph and faces an uphill struggle to finish well tomorrow.

Period 2: Alonso puts in a beautiful lap to go fastest on the harder compound, with his closest rivals all on the marginally faster softer tyre. The BMWs chose not to go out for a final run, a gamble which nearly didn't pay off as Heidfeld ended the period in 10th scraping through to the final period.

Period 3: After the fuel-burn phase at the beginning of Period 3, the cars pit for new tyres for their first serious attempt at pole - Ralf Schumacher takes the honour first ... he won't stay there for long as Alonso hits the track. Alonso goes quickest, matched almost exactly sector for sector by Massa who finishes just 7 1/100ths behind. Hamilton goes 4th with another run to go.

I think I may have just lost my voice, to say nothing of causing my neighbours to call the police to report loud screaming coming from next door! Hamilton, who had been a couple of tenths off Alonso's pace all day, pulled it out the bag when it mattered and planted his Mclaren firmly on pole - the only driver to go below 1m 20s in the final stint. WOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!
