Notes:

Gearbox problems for Coulthard see him stuck down in 21st at the end of the first period of qualifying. Button still struggling with a poor car just makes it through to the second period. Sutil goes off late in the first period and walks back in as his car is pushed back to the Spyker pit.

The Hondas are unsurprisingly the slowest cars in the second period of qualifying, with Barrichello marginally quicker than Button. Davidson in the Super Aguri showed good pace and was in the top ten until the last gasp of the session which saw Fisichella scramble his way into the final period.

No real surprises in the final session - Massa edges out Hamilton to take pole, perhaps carrying a little less fuel than team-mates Raikkonen and Alonso who line up behind them on the second row. BMW's good form continues with Kubica finally having a trouble-free qualifying to join team-mate Heidfeld on the 3rd row.
