Notes: A Saturday morning engine change for Kovalainen will give him a 10 slot grid penalty for tomorrow's race.

FIRST PERIOD: Coulthard reporting something broken on the car which is causing it to crab under braking, he's been wide of the circuit twice in a lap. But in a 15 minute session, will the team have time to fix it?

Kovalainen puts it wide and into the wall at Turn 4, losing his rear wing in the process and causing the session to be red-flagged while the marshalls clear the debris. That may save Coulthard's bacon, giving the team precious extra minutes to work on his car. But it's surely the end of Kovalainen's day - he'll start from the back of the grid tomorrow.

Coulthard has made it back out on track but is going very slowly - he recovers pace and goes through. Even more remarkably, Kovalainen has also got out but his lap is not enough to take him any further, and with his 10 slot penalty, he will indeed start from the back of the grid. Another poor qualifying session from Schumacher sees his Toyota finish in 18th.

Both Spyker's, a Williams, a Toyota, a Renault and a Super Aguri drop out.

SECOND PERIOD: Coulthard runs wide again on his first run - he's spending more time off track than on! Hamilton on a flyer ... purple in every sector and the first into the 1:15's. Alonso follows him into the 1:15's but can't quite beat him ... on this run! They're both over half a second quicker than Massa in third.

Heidfeld has one chance to go through, he just starts a flying lap before the flag and has yet to set a time after having one deleted for crossing the final chicane. Coulthard can't do enough to get into the top 10, although team-mate Webber is well up in 4th. Heidfeld makes good use of his one chance and goes 3rd, the only driver other than the McLaren's to break the 1:16 barrier.

Both Honda's, both Toro Rosso's, a Red Bull and the second Super Aguri drop out.

FINAL PERIOD: Hamilton runs wide at the final chicane but manages to avoid the Champions' Wall. Heidfeld goes fastest during this early fuel-burn period. Rosberg, of whom we've heard very little so far, runs wide. With seven minutes to go, cars are starting to pit for soft tyres for their first attempt at a pole time. Hamilton and Raikkonen trading purple times through sectors 1 and 2 but Hamilton takes the lap, only to lose provisional pole to his team-mate a few seconds later.

New set of boots for Hamilton as he goes out for his final run - can he learn from Alonso and stay right at the end of his flying lap - it's a faster line if you're not concerned about the following lap's time.

Rosberg has a time deleted for cutting the chicane - he's currently 10th - can he improve? Hamilton takes half a second off Alonso's time, again breaking the 1:16 barrier - Alonso is flying, if his final sector is tidy, he'll take the pole ... he doesn't do it! Can anyone else pip Hamilton for pole? NO!!!!!!!
