Notes:

PERIOD 1: Technical problems for Albers prevent him setting a time, leaving him at the back of the grid. Stunning performance from Hamilton, who clearly enjoys this track. Coulthard went out for his last stint on the harder compound tyres and set the fastest final sector time of anyone. Liuzzi pulled a lap out of the bag to go 4th in the closing stages of the first period, in marked contrast to team-mate Speed in 18th.

PERIOD 2: In an uncanny replay of Schumacher Snr's park and display antics of last year, Raikkonen comes to a halt at the Rascasse with a broken steering arm, blocking the track as his team-mate Massa concludes his lap. He manages to get back to the pits - can the team effect repairs in time for him to set a time in this period. Hamilton goes fastest, 2/10ths quicker than in the first period, only for Alonso to go even quicker. Honda's performance problems are less obvious at the tight and twisty Monaco circuit, both currently in the top 10, although not sure to stay there.

It looks like Ferrari have given up their attempt to fix Raikkonen's broken car. The BMWs are putting in another strong showing in 3rd and 4th behind the two McLarens. Kovalainen on his flying lap, needing to improve to go into the next period, comes up behind Coulthard on his out lap who won't concede track space. Kovalainen improves, but not enough. The incident is under investigation by the stewards. Barrichello makes it through to the final period, edging out team-mate Button.

PERIOD 3: Coulthard penalised for blocking Kovalainen by not being allowed to take part in the final period. Unusual penalty - he would normally have taken part, but have some or all of his times deleted. However, being ruled out altogether, promotes Button into the final slot for the last session of qualifying. Not sure yet where that leaves Coulthard - 11th or 16th on the grid?

The fuel-burn period seems to be cut short as the teams come for fresh tyres earlier than usual, perhaps fearing further rain towards the end of the session. Hamilton fails to improve on his "banker" lap during the fuel burn phase, but although Alonso improves he remains behind his team-mate. The few spots of rain seem to have stopped, so there may yet be time for a last-ditch attempt on pole. Both McLaren drivers go for it, but Hamilton hits traffic and loses out to Alonso at the last gasp.

The final decision of the stewards re Coulthard is that he will start the race from 13th on the grid, dropping 2 places from where his P2 qualifying time put him.
