Notes:
With the Australian GP a few weeks later than usual this year, the weather conditions are causing a few problems - track temperature is so low that grip is a problem, particularly for Ide who is sliding all over the place. At one stage he became stranded, unable to get the car into reverse to manoevre back on track, causing the session to be red-flagged.
Barrichello is the first of the top team drivers to be eliminated in qualifying, getting held up behind Ide on his last flying lap in period 1.
Massa loses it on the way into turn 11 and puts in the tyre barriers, causing the second period to be red-flagged with only 5 mins 28 secs to go. Button and Webber, both on flying laps and yet to set a time in this period, now have their work cut out to get into the final period.
The Ferraris seem to be struggling with balance, M Schumacher failing to make it into the final shoot-out. Rain starts falling in the closing seconds of the period.
Rosberg, who has performed so well in qualifying in the first two races, is struggling to find pace at this circuit after very little running during practice.
Webber and Heidfeld both go out in period 3 on intermediates, but with the rain now stopped, they have to pit for dry tyres as their lap times are outside the 110% time limit to earn back their fuel for the race.
Alonso puts a fast banker lap in early in the period, a wise precaution with the possibility of further showers. Raikkonen slows right down to give himself track room and risks losing a lap of fuel.
Gearbox problems struck towards the end of period 2 for Trulli and he has taken no part in period 3. Nonetheless Toyota are showing better pace this weekend.
Montoya spins on a flying lap in the closing stages of the period, fortunately recovering the car and not compromising the other runners. Button posts fastest time by half a second - is there anyone still on track who can beat the time? Montoya is flying again, can he make up for the spin? No, a slow final sector sees him go 5th and it's pole for Button, his first since Canada last year. But with the fast-starting Renaults of Fisichella and Alonso lining up behind him on the grid, will it be enough?
