Notes:

Robert Kubica takes over the second BMW Sauber seat, after Villeneuve declared himself unfit to race after his accident at the German GP last weekend. Kubica becomes the first Pole to take part in a GP.

Both Alonso and Michael Schumacher have the unusual penalty of having 2 seconds added to their fastest times in each of the three qualifying sessions (assuming they get through to the final session!). In Alonso's case, the penalty is for dangerous driving after he brake tested Albers during free practice, and in Schumacher's case for overtaking cars under a red flag.

* Above times are inclusive of the 2 sec penalty.

Both Albers and Button are qualifying in the knowledge that they will have a 10 slot penalty on the grid tomorrow after engine changes earlier in the weekend.

M Schumacher is battling for the best grid position he can get, whereas Alonso has made one run in the second session to condition tyres for tomorrow's race and appears not to be taking any further part in the session ... spoke too soon, Alonso has just gone out for a final run!

Neither Alonso nor M Schumacher make the final session, new boy Kubica is the main beneficiary, getting through in 10th in his first ever qualifying, ahead of his more experienced team-mate Heidfeld.

Big, black clouds looming over the track in the closing minutes of the final session!
