Notes:

Franck Montagny lines up for his first race weekend, having taken over the Super Aguri seat from Yuji Ide, who was withdrawn on advice from the FIA that he wasn't up to scratch!

The Williams of both Webber and Rosberg had an engine change pre-qualifying, so will suffer 10 slot penalties on the grid (taking them to 19th and 22nd on the grid respectively). Raikkonen has a new spec Mercedes engine for this race, Montoya has to wait as his engine is not due to be changed until next race.

The first period of qualifying is marred by a false red flag appearing on the timing screens. Villeneuve appeared to have suffered most as he was on a flying lap when the clock was stopped. However, the stewards delayed the second period for 10 minutes while they sorted out the correct timings and Villeneuve's lap puts him in 15th, safely through. Klien however loses out, missing the cut in 17th, despite protests from his team.

Ralf Schuamcher, competing in his 150th race, spins on an outlap but recovers and continues - he fails to make the cut however, finishing 11th. Fisichella finishes 13th, failing to make the final session for the second race in succession. He stormed down to the BMW garage to remonstrate with Villeneuve who he clearly believes held him up on his last chance flying lap.

Post-Qualifying: Villeneuve is penalised for impeding Fisichella's flying lap, even though the stewards accept that it wasn't deliberate. He dropped two places on the grid but regained one as a result of Webber's engine change penalty and now lines up 9th, on the clean side of the track.
