Notes:
Half-way through the first period of qualifying and Massa is the first to hit the barriers on the narrow streets of the Monaco circuit. The session is red-flagged and team-mate M Schumacher is worst affected as the only driver yet to set a time.
Raikkonen is fastest in the first period, with Scott Speed a slightly surprising drop-out having apparently misunderstood a pit message and come in shortly before the end of the session, leaving him insufficient time to put in another lap.
Button is struggling with understeer in the second period and has pitted for another new set of tyres in a last-ditch attempt to get into the final period of qualifying. He doesn't make it!
M Schumacher secured pole with an impressive lap, holding off the opposition by parking his Ferrari in the barriers at the Rascasse compromising the final flying laps of anyone who might have beaten him! The other teams are NOT happy, believing it was a deliberate act from the 7 times world champion ... we'll have to wait and see whether the stewards take any action.
Post Qualifying penalties:
* Fisichella had his 3 fastest times deleted, dropping him to 9th on the grid, after the stewards ruled he had impeded Coulthard.
** M Schumacher had all his times deleted and will start last after the stewards found him guilty of deliberately parking his car at the Rascasse, thus depriving his rivals of the opportunity to beat his pole time.
