Notes:

Jacques Villeneuve will start 10 places back from wherever he qualifies after a precautionary change of his engine, which was damaged in transit on route to Spain.

Coulthard drops it into Turn 3 in the first period of qualifying and ends up in the barriers and out of the session. Session is red-flagged to retrieve Coulthard's car, bad news for anyone on a hot lap on new tyres. Interviewed in the pits, Coulthard believes something broke on the car, causing his off - probably suspension.

McLaren fail to shine in the second period, with Montoya missing the cut in 12th and Raikkonen finishing 9th. Both Williams also miss the cut, the first time this season for Webber.
