Notes:

Pre-Qualifying at Silverstone was truly bizarre - and quite funny to watch from the stands! Most of the teams had weather forecasts suggesting that it would start raining half way through the main Qualifying session. In order to avoid having to qualify in the wet, pre-qualifying became a battle to see who could go slowest and therefore go out first in the second session. While a few drivers played it straight and went for a time, including Jenson Button who was fastest in pre-qualifying, most teams at least hedged their bets by having one driver go quick and one slow.

The Ferrari drivers both apparently made mistakes on their flying laps, although they now tell us that was part of the "go-slow" strategy which they were trying to mask from the other teams so they didn't all get the same idea.

They did, of course, and first Coulthard, then Montoya, then half the grid went flat out in the first sector (just to show they could) then eased off in the second and drove like my granny in the third! While it was a complete farce, it was also very funny.

In Qualifying proper, Button almost had the last laugh when the rain never arrived (although there were some tense minutes towards the end of the session as the clouds grew ever blacker and heavier overhead), but unfortunately was unable to take the pole that the crowd so clearly wanted. Raikkonen, slower in the first two sectors, put in an absolutely stunning third sector to take pole and it's a real pleasure to see a McLaren back at the sharp end ... next step, the race!

NB The following penalties were imposed which will affect the starting grid:
- Panis on his slow-down lap impeded Massa and had his time deleted
- Fisichella had an engine change after Friday Practice 1 and was demoted 10 places on the grid - he elected not to run in Qualifying and will therefore start at the back (or more likely from the pitlane)
- Alonso, Bruni and Baumgartner had engine changes after Friday Practice 2 and were demoted 10 places on the grid
As a result of these penalties, the back of the grid looks like this: 16th Alonso, 17th Panis, 18th Bruni, 19th Baumgartner, 20th Fisichella.
